북청사자놀음보존회는 1967년 중요무형문화재(현, 국가무형유산) 지정 이후, 함경남도 북청군의 사자놀이를 50여 년간 굳건히 전승해 온 단체이다. 특히 북청사자놀음이 포함된 ‘한국의 탈춤’이 2022년 UNESCO 인류무형문화유산으로 등재되면서, 우리의 소중한 문화유산을 세계에 알리는 주역이 되었다. 본회는 전 세계인의 문화유산이 된 북청사자놀음의 가치를 이어가기 위해 국내외 공연, 체계적인 전승 교육, 학술 연구 활동 등을 활발히 펼치며 우리 전통문화의 대중화와 세계화에 앞장서고 있다.

Bukcheong Saja Noreum Preservation Association for National Intangible Cultural Heritage has dedicated over 50 years to preserving and transmitting the traditional Sajachum (lion dance) of Bukcheong County, Hamgyeongnam-do Province, since its designation as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 1967. Following the inscription of ‘Talchum, Mask Dance Drama in the Republic of Korea’—which proudly includes Bukcheong Saja Noreum—on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2022, the Association has taken center stage in promoting this precious cultural treasure to the world. To honor and sustain the value of this globally recognized heritage, the Association actively engages in domestic and international performances, structured transmission education, and academic research, leading the way in the popularization and globalization of Korean traditional culture.

북청사자놀음

천오백년 이상을 이어져 내려 온 사자의 용맹한 포효가 정적을 깨우고, 잡귀를 몰아내는 거침없는 춤사위를 시작한다. 마을의 안녕과 집안의 안과태평(安過太平)을 기원하며, 주변의 액운을 집어삼키고 나쁜 기운을 물리치는 벽사진경(辟邪進慶)의 힘찬 에너지가 무대 위에서 폭발한다. 흥겨운 퉁소가락에 맞추어 북청사자의 경쾌하고, 활달하면서도 역동적인 춤사위는 과거의 벽사(辟邪)를 넘어, 가장 강렬한 전통의 카타르시스가 될 것이다.

Bukcheong Saja Noreum

The valiant roar of the Saja (lion)—echoing through over 1,500 years of history—shatters the silence, igniting an unstoppable dance that drives out evil spirits. With wishes for the village’s well-being and peace within every household, a powerful surge of energy bursts onto the stage, embodying byeoksajingyeong—the driving out of misfortune and the welcoming of blessings. Moving to the joyful, rhythmic melodies of the Tungso (traditional bamboo flute), the light-footed, vibrant, and dynamic movements of the Bukcheong Saja (Lion) transcend the ancient ritual of warding off misfortune, transforming into the ultimate, most exhilarating catharsis of Korean tradition.
